Sensex closes below 10K; Realty,power plunge

Equities ended sharply lower on Friday as traders booked positions ahead of the weekend. Stocks from Realty, power and metal sectors were amongst the worst performers. This is the lowest level of the Sensex since July 2006.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 9,912.01, down 669.48 points or 6.33 per cent. It touched an intra-day low of 9,911.32 and a high of 10,786.93.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 3,054, down 6.58 per cent. The broader index touched an intra-day low of 3046.60 and an intra-day high of 3,335.96.

The key-index dipped to 9,911.32 during the day and a high of 10,786.93. Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty tumbled by 194.95, or 5.96 per cent, to 3074.35 after touching the day's low of 3046.60 and a high of 3335.95 points.

Marketmen said the Sensex dipped to the lowest level in over two years on concerns of a sharp global economic slowdown and sluggish corporate earning. They said a series of measures announced by the government and the Reserve Bank of India failed to che ck rising capital outflow by foreign funds.
