Wall Street ends on a quiet note; Dow up 49 pts & Asian markets trading firm; Nikkei up 1.12%

Wall Street ends on a quiet note ahead of Christmas, puts an end to a five-day losing streak. In economic data, durable goods and consumer spending were better than expectations, but jobless claims jumped to a climbed to a 26-year high.

Forecasts, easing concern that the recession will cause corporate revenue to plummet.

Consumer spending fell 0.6% in November while durables goods new orders fell to 1%. However, jobless claims climbed to a 26-year high at 586,000.

The Dow Jones gained 48.99, or 0.58%, to 8,468.48. The S&P 500 index futures advanced 4.99 points, or 0.58%, to 868.15, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 3.36 points, or 0.22%, to 1,524.90.
