The US markets gained after a turbulent session on the back of reports that indicated the pace of layoffs is beginning to slow against worries that the rally may be getting ahead of itself. The Dow rose 101.63 points, or 1.2%, to 8,512.28. The S&P 500 index added 15.73 points, or 1.7%, to 919.53. The NASDAQ gained 4.98 points, or 0.3%, to 1,759.10.
