Market Outlook: Indian markets may have flat to positive opening today on the back of mixed reaction from the Asian markets. Nifty has supports at 4360-4400 and resistances are at 4500-4550. Markets may remain weak for the day after yesterday’s pullback. Overall outlook for the markets today is that of guarded optimism as the overseas cues and bear covering are likely to cushion downsides, especially if the Nifty spot remains above the 4450 levels.

On the global space: Wall St ends higher led by financial, retail, technology while Asia trading mixed; Shanghai up, Nikkei down. The US Markets made a broad-based rebound from the previous session's sharp decline, finishing near intra-day highs. The markets snapped a two-day losing streak. The rally was led by financial, retail and technology as stocks posted gains across the board. American express was one of the key gainers after analyst upgrades. The markets seemed to shrug off some weak economic data. Housing starts dropped 1% in July, well short of expectations after an upwardly-revised 6.5-percent jump in June. In important earnings from the US, Hewlett-Packard reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings and revenue on Tuesday. The PC maker said that excluding other items, it earned 91 cents a share in the third quarter. Meanwhile its revenue fell 2%. The Dow gained 82.60 points, or 0.9%, to 9,217.94. The S&P 500 index gained 9.94 points, or 1%, to 989.67, while the Nasdaq Composite Index added 25.08 points, or 1.3%, to 1,955.92.
