Stocks gyrated between negative and positive territory as investors were cautious ahead of inflation data, due after market hours, which is forecast at 12.02 per cent, marginally higher than the previous week's 11.98 per cent.
National Stock Exchange's Nifty was up 1.04 per cent or 34 points at 4564.35. The index swung in a range of 4569.55 and 4493.70 intra-day.
Second rung stocks also posted decent gains. BSE Midcap Index and BSE Smallcap Index were up 0.74 per cent and 0.59 per cent respectively.
Sectorwise, consumer durables, metals, auto and technology shares put up a good show while capital goods and power stocks edged lower.
Biggest Sensex gainers were Sterlite Industries (4.77%), Tata Motors (4.11%), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.99%), HDFC Bank (2.89%) and HDFC (2.85%).
Losers comprised Bharti Airtel (-2.71%), BHEL (-1.93%), Tata Power (1.69%), Hindustan Unilever (-1%) and Reliance Communications.
